Batik in Jember hereditary

Citizens who make batik (batik) in District Sumberjambe, Jember regency, East Java, is the work inherited from generation to generation in the local district.

"I learned batik from my mom, while my mother also learned batik from my grandmother," said Sumiati (31), one in District Sumberjambe batik.

According to him, the batik work is quite difficult because it requires patience and prudence for the batik in a white cloth which had been given the pattern of the batik. "Most of the batik batik here also learned from generation to generation," he said.

Some residents who learned to batik, he said, did not survive long, if it does not have a strong desire to learn batik.

"There are some residents who complained after a few days learning batik batik here because the job requires persistence and patience," he said.

He argues, for the batik on a piece of cloth usually take 1-2 days according to the pattern desired by the customer. "We must be careful to batik in a piece of cloth so it does not disappoint consumers," she said.

So far, she said, her second child was started to help himself in a piece of batik cloth, but the motive was not too complicated. "Only my second child who wants to learn batik like me, while others are not willing to learn batik," he said.

Other batik, Mahfidatul, confessed to learn batik Sumberjambe from her mother since childhood because his mother's daily work is in a batik home industry batik in Jember.

"It is the job of making batik is a hereditary occupation which must be conserved by communities Jember," he said.

He explained, a batik must have a high enough patience for batik work is not like other jobs that have to be quick. "I do not regret working as batik, although penghasilanya just enough to meet everyday needs," he said.

To batik paper, he said, he received wages amounting to Rp25 thousand to Rp30 thousand per piece of cloth, batik when it takes a day to complete the batik motof accordance with the order. "If a full day, I can finish two pieces of batik cloth only," he said.

He explains, normally the best-selling batik is batik motif Sumberjambe tobacco leaf known as batik batik Labako which is typical of Jember.
