Industrial Revolution Solo Batik

Industrial Revolution Solo Batik

Hundreds of the batik industry in the city of Solo, Central Java, began pioneering environmentally-friendly industry. Gradually, the natural dye batik and switched to using bio-ethanol as a fuel.

Solo mission is in line to become environmentally friendly city. Contributors KBR68H Yudha Satriawan trace what is being done solo batik industry to be more 'green'.

Batik Carnival
Solo batik carnival atmosphere: "Yes I ask citizens Solo somewhat backward, give participants to walk ... Give participants to berkarnaval ... yes SBC seems to group participants is still long."

The streets become crowded Solo batik demonstration stage a la carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Hundreds of participants dress up and be creative. There was a knight in armor similar to the kingdom, the peacock, clown clothes, and others. They walked while dancing. The hope, said Mayor Solo Joko Widodo, could boost the popularity of batik industry.

Joko Widodo: "We want the image of batik can use anyone, young and old, batik is not always identical with the old impression ... and finally a solo home in the batik industry and its surrounding areas will come up again ..."

Now the city of Solo, the center conducted batik industrial revolution.

Ahmad Faqih: "If the natural color is not so thick ... that's more soft ... this red color from biksa ... if parents want more can be mixed with wood materials will be a brownish mahogany ... ..."

Natural dye
Kampung Batik batik crafters Laweyan, Ahmad Faqin, showing hundreds of batik fabrics on display in the window of his home. Batik-batik has been using natural dyes. The color is more dull, not as bright batik colored with chemical dyes.

Tens of years, he inherited from his parents to his batik business. Together with 20 crafters batik, batik production training Ahmad natural color of the local government held free of charge. The result, the Joint Business Group Natural Color Batik.

Ahmad Faqih: "This is God bless all of them are already be ... yes even a little bit ... the members we've made ... and indeed we undertake, we come up with this natural color as a typical product of the natural color of batik solo ... .. .

Ahmad, chairman of business group, said that only use natural dye leaves or trees. And it's safe for the environment.

Ahmad Faqih: "there must be a waste of synthetic dyes ... we can use nature around us yes ... the obvious waste in a bit ... almost no waste of raw material ... if it's a lot ... here are ... there is even leaves in the garden that could be used ... like mahogany wood waste ... it can be used ... teak leaves can also be used ... for the basic-macemlah, there teger wood, height, etc. .. .

Waste problem
Waste batik become a major problem in the city of Solo. There is only one Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP), to hundreds of home in Kampung Batik industry Laweyan.

The atmosphere at the edge of the river: "This WWTP is very close or are on the River Jenes waste ... they are not accommodated in this WWTP, direct it down the river and flows into the River Jenes Solo ... the water is black, foamy, and smelly sting, stink ... "

Environment Agency (BLH) Solo City continues to seek a solution of this waste. Solo BLH Spokesman Sultan Najamuddin invited me to see batik waste that pollute rivers.

Sultan Najamuddin: "It's a waste of accumulated precipitation decades ... in Laweyan it's a lot of industries and cottage industries of all ... it was tens or even hundreds of years ... we see that there are rivers in Surakarta , 50 percent of our sample accurately, the concentration of COD and BODnya ... polluting industries contribute ... "

Bio-ethanol
Besides using natural dyes, dozens of artisans in Kampung Batik Laweyan started switching to bio-ethanol, a substitute for kerosene. This fuel is used to melt the wax that coats the coloring process of batik. Socialization of the use of biofuels is done in house Kampung Batik Laweyan Chairman, Alfa Fabeela.

Batik crafters group Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta UMS took to make bio-ethanol burner for the batik industry in Laweyan. Chairman of the UMS team, Sri Kusmiyati, claimed to have tested a variety of other alternative fuels. Only a suitable bio-ethanol.

Sri Kusmiyati: "Kan liquid form, so still ... compared to similar petroleum gas, gas-operated hard ... hard ... continue to be diminished if briquette combustion take long to start ... the advantages of bio-ethanol, yes because of its more environmentally friendly liquid ... ... ingredients of flour iles-iles ... flour starch but not for eating ... yes ... a kind of tuber "

Government encouragement
The government had no choice, the environment and the batik industry must be saved. Solo Mayor Joko Widodo decided to immediately switch to natural dye batik to reduce hazardous waste. This step is supported colleges that help make the stove, bio-ethanol fuel.

This fits with the plan as the City makes the Solo Batik, as well as Environmental Friendly City. Mayor Joko Widodo believe eco-friendly products such as batik is a huge opportunity in the export market.

Joko Widodo: "batik trend forward is back to nature ... environmentally friendly industry has many enthusiasts in the U.S. and overseas ... Europe ... they want to batiks from nature ... as well as to create a green city life better. .. "

Cultural heritage
The UN cultural agency UNESCO has recognized batik as a unique world heritage Indonesia. This is a bright spot for the city of Solo to advance to the international world. However, some countries apply strict rules for imported products. States of America and Europe was already assured, they will only accept textile products that do not use chemical dyes.

Increased natural color batik enthusiasts apparently not accompanied by the availability of raw materials. Raw material supply of natural dyes is limited. During this natural color batik entrepreneurs rely solely on what's available in traditional markets, said Ahmad Faqin.

Ahmad Faqih: "That's part of selling ... there are some search gitu loh ... because search is easy ... if ya like wood teger, height, jambal from outside the island that was yes ... from the island of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. .. but others here a lot ... in the shops there is also a batik dyes ... usually there are specialty shops ... "

Food
Not only the supply of natural dye that caused concerns, but also bio-ethanol. Bio-ethanol used from tubers and sugar cane, which is also a human food. Alfa worry, bio-ethanol production would be hampered.

Alfa Fabela: "Actually that is included in our thoughts for the future that yes, the article was about if bio-fuel ingredient that's sometimes use human food energy was also competing with humans ... and I'll include those as it or not ... because we're hoping this batik industry continues to grow big later ... so do not let the raw materials of bio-ethanol is competing with man ... yes this is what we need to consider. "

Even so, in the field, inventories of natural dyes as well as bio-ethanol is not abundant, Mayor Joko Widodo said. He suspects, the supply crunch karena natural color batik is still less popular.

Joko Widodo: "It is a problem for its material ingredients can indeed be a problem ... but it really was not a commercial ... if you have commercial people know, ooo was able to put this on, we can use it, then it will be different .. . I saw was indeed as he tried, tried, and I see who likes it a lot ... which obviously is good for the environment friendly ... I see myself on the field ... "

Export commodities
Batik is the number one export commodity in Solo. Solo batik export value per month on average to reach half a million dollars the United States, or the equivalent of five billion rupiah. Trends in natural color batik enthusiasts also increased in export markets.

Chairman of the Joint Business Group Natural Kampung Batik Batik Color Laweyan Ahmad Faqih sure, batik natural colors would be excellent. Moreover, UNESCO has been confirmed as one of Indonesian batik world's cultural heritage.

Ahmad Faqih: "Because it is for synthetic dye for coloring the world has a lot less ... even to Europe were the colors of Naptol it and so it has been reduced at all ... it probably was not very good effects on the skin ..."
